Background of the Study
Urban farming has gained prominence in Ojo as a viable solution to food insecurity and environmental challenges in densely populated urban areas (Okafor, 2023). As traditional agriculture faces constraints due to urban sprawl, urban farming initiatives offer a means to produce fresh food locally, reduce food miles, and promote sustainable practices (Adeoye, 2024). These initiatives also create opportunities for community engagement, economic empowerment, and environmental education. However, urban farming in Ojo is confronted by challenges such as limited space, soil contamination, and inadequate technical support (Ibrahim, 2025). The study investigates how urban farming contributes to food security while examining the socio-economic benefits and environmental sustainability of these practices. By integrating data on crop yields, community participation, and policy frameworks, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of urban agriculture’s potential and challenges in improving food security (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the promise of urban farming in enhancing food security in Ojo, significant challenges persist. Limited access to quality land, environmental hazards such as soil contamination, and a lack of technical training have hindered the full potential of urban agriculture (Okafor, 2023). These issues contribute to inconsistent crop yields and threaten the sustainability of food production initiatives (Adeoye, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by examining the constraints and opportunities within urban farming practices to inform strategies that can effectively bolster food security in urban settings (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the contribution of urban farming to local food security.
  2. To assess the socio-economic benefits of urban agriculture in Ojo.
  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for sustainable urban farming.

Research Questions:

  1. How does urban farming improve food security in Ojo?
  2. What socio-economic benefits arise from urban agricultural practices?
  3. What challenges must be addressed to enhance urban farming sustainability?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Urban farming significantly improves local food security.
  2. Urban agriculture provides measurable socio-economic benefits.
  3. Addressing technical and environmental challenges will enhance urban farming outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the role of urban farming in ensuring food security. Its findings will guide policymakers, practitioners, and community stakeholders in developing sustainable urban agriculture strategies that enhance food access and promote economic development (Okafor, 2023; Adeoye, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining urban farming and its contribution to food security in Ojo.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urban Farming: The practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around urban areas.
  • Food Security: Reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.
  • Sustainability: The capacity to maintain processes or practices over the long term without adverse impacts.
